RESEARCH PAPER
Research Paper Format:
Students are required to submit a research paper from an approved topic from the subject matter of this course. Topics and sources are due prior to the completion of the research paper, and their timely submission will be counted for a grade.
Papers must be 5-7 pages, double spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font. The Format is Chicago Manual of Style (CMS). The parameters of the research paper will be discussed in class, and helpful links will be placed on the website.
Your research paper must be between the time periods of Dawn of Civilization and 1650 CE.
**PLAGARISM WILL RESULT IN A ZERO GRADE**
Research Paper: 115 points Topics Due September 11 - 5 points Sources Due October 9 - 10 points Final Paper Due November 15 - 100 points
Requirements for Sources:
1 primary document, either from the course textbook, or document of your choosing
3 secondary source documents (at least one must be a book)
Not acceptable for the three required secondary sources:
Wikipedia
Websites not linked to an institution such as a college or a museum
Textbooks
Books with a reading level lower than 11th/12th grade ( you can check this on Amazon.com usually. They typically post if it is a lower reading level than 11th/12th grade).
Dictionaries/Encyclopedias
Lecture notes
Base Grading Format:
1 to 15 points deduction if you don't have a thesis, or it isn't clear, or it doesn't match your argument, etc
1 to 10 points deduction if you don't meet the page requirements
Bibliography is on an additional page
Full pages minimum, text on fifth page must take up at least 80% of the page
1 to 10 points deduction if you don't meet the research source requirements (not enough sources, or to not make changes I require when I review your sources)
1 to 20 points deduction for not using CMS formatting.
Need to footnote properly
Numbering for footnotes in correct spot
Bibliography on last page
Citations where citations are needed
Quoting correctly (using a single spaced paragraph if words in quote exceed 40 words and in paragraph if less than 40 words, etc)
Cover page
1 to 20 point deduction if research does not correlate to your thesis
1 to 25 point deduction for structure, flow, grammar, looks like you only did one draft and didn't edit at all, grievous spelling errors, etc.
Since there has been some confusion of citing artwork you are accessing via the online collections database of a museum, I wanted to be sure to clarify how it should be cited. Please remember you can only use the MET website or other museum website to only cite the artwork and information directly related to that object:
